FY 09 New Employee Benefit Orientation Schedule Available

The New Employee Benefits Orientation Schedule for Fall 2008 is available on the Human Resources Department web site at http://www.shsu.edu/~hrd_www/benefits/orien.html .

Please encourage all new benefits-eligible faculty, staff, and graduate student employees in your department to attend a group orientation session on or before their first active duty date.   This would also apply to any employees who were not benefit eligible in the Spring, and are now returning to a benefit eligible status in the Fall.  Time does not normally allow for individual sessions.  The paperwork completed at orientation includes the documents necessary to initiate an employee's payroll setup.
Please note:  An employee can not be paid unless the approved Payroll Action Form (PAF) and required benefit and employment documents are completed and received by the Human Resources Department before the appropriate payroll deadline.  A list of the Payroll deadlines is available at http://www.shsu.edu/~pay_www/info/action-form.html .

Please make sure that each benefits-eligible faculty and graduate student employee is aware of his/her eligibility status.  Each benefits-eligible faculty and graduate student employee, who has not received a benefits packet, should obtain a packet from the Human Resources Department (Estill Building, Rm. 334).  In addition to the other documents necessary for payroll setup, insurance enrollment forms must be completed during the employee's initial period of eligibility.

Under current state legislation, there is a 90 day waiting period before part-time faculty, staff, and graduate student new hires are eligible to participate in the health insurance plans.  Following the initial insurance enrollment period, the next opportunity to apply for insurance coverage (without a qualifying life event) would be during the next Summer Enrollment period.  Additional information is also available concerning Graduate Student Insurance Eligibility and Enrollment at http://www.shsu.edu/~hrd_www/benefits/documents/GRADINFO.doc .

SHSU 'In the News'

Phillip Lyons, professor of criminal justice, was interviewed by the Bryan-College Station Eagle in a story discussing the statewide increase in the use of tasers by police departments.

Donald Freeman, chair and professor of economics and international business, was quoted in a number of media outlets, including the LA Times, New York Times and Washington Post, regarding his 1998 study, titled "Beer and the business cycle," that examined sales from 1955 to 1994. In it, he says that economic problems have no effect on alcohol sales.

Larry Hoover, professor of criminal justice, was interviewed by Houston Channel 11 for a two-part series on the Houston Police Department's Crime Response Unit. Hoover said such blanket enforcement tactics can reduce crime by 20 percent, but there is a danger of overzealous policing infringing on constitutional rights.
